Com’è nata la tua partecipazione in questo progetto? / How did your participation in this project come about?

Io e Francesco Vacca siamo conosciuti grazie al LILIUM Florentinum IV (un evento a Firenze in cui i partecipanti per due giorni parlano solamente in latino) e lì abbiamo subito pensato a un fumetto in latino, ma è rimasta solo un’idea fumosa per alcuni mesi. Almeno fino al Lucca comics 2022, quando sono andato a trovare Francesco allo stand in cui presentava il suo fumetto e abbiamo definito i dettagli del progetto.

Francesco Vacca and I got to know each other thanks to the LILIUM Florentinum IV (an event in Florence where participants speak only Latin for two days) and we immediately thought of a comic book in Latin, but it remained only a vague idea for a few months. At least until Lucca comics 2022, when I met Francesco at the stand where he was presenting his comic and we defined the details of the project.

Qual è la tua storia preferita? / What is your favourite story?

Partiamo dal fatto che ogni storia è bellissima da sé, ho difficoltà a trovarne una da preferire. Forse solo De postremo sole (che è stata anche la prima che ho tradotto). Adoro il mondo tardoantico e il tema dello scontro di civiltà tra cristianesimo e paganesimo, vederlo in un’ottica così umana, cadenzato dal passare degli inverni, mi ha veramente fatto emozionare.

Let’s start with the fact that each story is beautiful on its own, I have difficulty finding a favourite. Perhaps only De postremo sole (which was also the first one I translated). I love the late antique world and the theme of the clash of civilisations between Christianity and paganism, seeing it in such a human perspective, cadenced by the passing of the winters, really moved me.

Com’è nata la tua partecipazione in questo progetto? / How did your participation in this project come about?

Grazie a una singolare coincidenza di tempistiche: Sonia scriveva il soggetto di De Postremo Sole e mi proponeva di farne qualcosa a fumetti (… in latino?) e praticamente nello stesso periodo conoscevo Rossano a LILIVM, il quale – scoperto che mi occupo di fumetti – mi proponeva di lavorare insieme a un progetto fumettistico in latino.
Ero tra due fuochi. Potevo tirarmi indietro?

Thanks to a singular coincidence of timing: Sonia was writing the subject of De Postremo Sole and proposed that I do something with it in comics (… in Latin?) and practically at the same time I met Rossano at LILIVM, who – having discovered my job of comics writer – proposed that we work together on a comics project in Latin.
I was between two fires. Could I back out?

Palesemente De vita Vestalis perché appare il miglior console di tutta la storia romana (coff… ho prestato il volto a quella comparsa… coff, coff).
Scherzi a parte, non c’è una storia preferita ma alcune che si contendono il primato. Tra queste De deis custodibus, De Imbribus, De Postremo Sole.

Clearly De vita Vestalis, because the best console in all of Roman history appears (emh.. I lent my face to him).
Joking aside, there is no favourite story but a few that vie for the top spot. These include De Deis Custodibus, De Imbribus, De Postremo Sole.

Il mio stretto rapporto con i Paperi Disney – passione, prima che lavoro – mi impone di optare per quel “Fortuna favet fortibus” che Carl Barks, creatore del personaggio, e Don Rosa, autore della celeberrima “The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck”, hanno cucito addosso a Paperon de’ Paperoni!

My close relationship with Disney’s Ducks – a passion, before a job – compels me to opt for Fortuna favet fortibus that Carl Barks, creator of the character, and Don Rosa, author of the very famous The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, sewed onto Scrooge McDuck!

Com’è nata la tua partecipazione in questo progetto? How did your participation in this project come about?

In un pomeriggio di novembre mi ero imbattuta in un annuncio su Facebook nel quale si invitavano gli autori di un gruppo a partecipare a un’antologia di racconti di Natale. La giornata era grigia, nuvolosa, con poca luce. In un baleno mi è venuta in mente una storia fatta e finita, ma non potevo certo definirla natalizia. Così ho pensato di farne altro. Era nato De postremo Sole e, con lui, questo progetto.

It was a November afternoon and I came across a Facebook post inviting writers to participate in a Christmas anthology with a short tale on the subject. It was a grey, cloudy afternoon with little light. In a flash, a complete story came up in my mind, but I could hardly describe it as “about Christmas”. So I thought of doing something else with it. De Postremo Sole was born and so this project.

De vita vestalis, perché me la sono letteralmente sognata. Nel senso, ho sognato di scriverla vedendone testo e vignette. Poi, senza abbandonare l’attività onirica, mi sono detta di ripetere il sogno, così da non dimenticarlo. Detto, fatto. Quando mi sono alzata, l’ho appuntato di getto e sono corsa al lavoro. Sono arrivata in ufficio abbastanza provata dall’eccessiva attività cerebrale notturna, ma molto contenta.

De vita vestalis, because I literally dreamt it. I dreamt the text and the panels. Then, without abandoning the dreaming activity, I told myself to dream it again, so as not to forget it. When I woke up, I remembered everything, I wrote it down and rushed to my job. In the office I was quite tired but very happy.
